Sea Moss Recipes: Simple Ways to Use Gel Every Day

What is the easiest way to cook with sea moss gel?

Blend, stir or whisk it into food you already make. Our four kitchen recipes are a mango smoothie, a warm spiced tea, overnight oats and a soup base. Three rules cover all of them: keep the heat low, whisk the gel into liquid first, and keep to the serving on the gel label, up to 3 servings a day.

Key takeaways

  • Sea moss gel is easiest to love when it disappears into food you already make with simple preparation.
  • The resource features mango smoothies, warm Caribbean tea, overnight oats, and soup and broth base recipes.
  • For those new to sea moss gel, consult the foundational guide on proper storage and daily serving techniques.

Sea moss gel is easiest to love when it disappears into food you already make. These are the recipes we actually use in the Yaow kitchen — each one takes minutes, works with any of our gel flavors, and fits within the serving on the gel label, up to 3 servings a day.

The recipes

New to gel? Start with how to use sea moss gel every day for storage and serving basics.

Which one to start with

All four exist because they solve different problems, not because four is a nice number.

  • You want this to become a habit and you own a blender: the smoothie. It is the most forgiving recipe here and the hardest one to get wrong.
  • You do not want to taste it at all: the soup base. Unflavoured gel in a blended vegetable soup is genuinely undetectable, which is why it is the one we suggest for people who tried a spoonful straight and hated it.
  • Mornings are rushed: overnight oats. Four jars on a Sunday covers most of the week and there is nothing to do at 7am.
  • You want the traditional version: the tea. It is how Caribbean households have taken sea moss for generations, and it is the only one of the four that is pleasant hot.

Three rules that apply to all of them

Keep the heat low. Sea moss gel sets because of the carrageenan in the moss. Hold it at a hard boil and that structure breaks down: it still tastes fine and still counts as a serving, but it stops thickening. Warm, whisk, do not boil.

Whisk it into liquid, never dump it into a pot. A spoonful of cold gel dropped into hot soup skins over before it dissolves. Mix it into a ladleful first, then return it. The same logic applies in a blender: liquid goes in before gel.

Follow the serving on the gel label. Doubling it does not double anything except the iodine, so stay at up to 3 servings a day, as the gel label directs. The numbers are on how much sea moss per day. This is food, not medicine.

Flavoured gel or unflavoured?

Unflavoured is the utility jar: soups, savoury cooking, anything where you do not want fruit turning up uninvited. Flavoured gels earn their place in the sweet recipes, where the fruit purée is doing real work and lets you cut the added sweetener entirely. In the overnight oats, a flavoured gel plus fresh fruit needs no maple syrup at all.

If you are cooking for a household where one person has decided they dislike sea moss, use unflavoured and put it in the soup. That is the single most reliable way we know to end the argument.

Questions readers ask on this site

Taken from what people actually search for here, answered from our own pages.

  • Does sea moss have iodine?

Yes. Sea moss, whether the purple African variety we use or the Chondrus crispus sold as Irish moss, is a seaweed, and seaweeds absorb iodine from the water they grow in. That is true of sea moss from any seller, not…

  • How much sea moss gel should you take per day?

We recommend up to 3 servings per day. See the instructions on the gel bottle for details.

  • How is Yaow Seamoss tested?

Our organic Purple African sea moss is tested at multiple stages, from sourcing through production, for cleanliness, heavy-metal screening, and batch consistency. We do not publish certificates on the site today, we do…
